The Oblate Sisters of Providence is the first sustained Roman Catholic sisterhood in the world established by women of African descent. On July 2, 1829 the Oblate Sisters of Providence were founded by Mother Mary Lange OSP, and Rev. James Nicholas Joubert SS, as the first congregation of women religious of African descent. This was the beginning of a legacy that has thrived over the past 180 years in 25 cities in the United States, Cuba, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and most recently Africa. Our legacy, steeped in the spirituality of Providence, is based on our commitment to bring the message of freedom to those who are oppressed by racism, ignorance, illiteracy, and moral decline; to implement the Gospel message in service to the poor; to defend the rights of all people, to reach out with compassion to those in need.
